Mistral AI is an AI company from Paris, founded in 2023 – Europe’s best-known maker of its own language models. Mistral combines open models with commercial API offerings and is widely seen as the European alternative to US and Chinese providers.
Current model family
December 2025 brought Mistral 3: the flagship Mistral Large 3 (mixture-of-experts, 675 billion parameters, 41 billion active) plus three compact Ministral models with open weights. Mistral Medium 3.5 followed in April 2026 – multimodal and optimized for agentic tasks and code.
What sets it apart
Mistral focuses on efficiency: comparatively small, fast models instead of sheer size. Add the European origin – contracting party, infrastructure, and data processing can all stay within the EU.
Le Chat and La Plateforme
Le Chat is the AI assistant for end users, including an enterprise edition with data residency guarantees. La Plateforme (now Mistral AI Studio) is the developer platform for API access to all models.
Relevance for EU companies
An EU provider simplifies GDPR compliance, data residency, and preparation for the EU AI Act – but does not replace a company’s own privacy assessment. For organizations that prioritize digital sovereignty, Mistral is the obvious option among frontier providers.
